Parking

The lack of adequate parking is a significant problem at many installations. Parking problems are usually found at commissaries, exchanges, barracks, and major employment areas.

When planning parking, assume that people are generally unwilling to walk more than 1000 feet from a parking space to their destination. For streets with heavy through traffic, avoid creating on-street parking. On-street parking typically results in higher crash rates than off-street parking.

Parking

Parking should be planned. Unplanned parking may lead to unsafe conditions and inefficient use of space.

When new facilities are constructed, design consideration for the parking area is often overlooked. Pavements in parking areas that are initially under-designed can experience excessive maintenance problems and a shortened service life. However, when properly designed and constructed, parking areas can be attractive, safe, and usable to the maximum degree.
