Emergency Vehicle Provisions

Preemption control transfers a traffic signal from normal operation to a special mode of operation. Preemption phases can be installed to give safe access to emergency and transit vehicles. When using preemption control, clearance and change intervals must be met. Pedestrians must also be provided sufficient time to complete their crossing. Refer to Chapter 4G of the MUTCD for additional information concerning emergency-vehicle access.
