Edge Drop-Off Hazards

Pavement edge drop-off is the vertical difference between the pavement edge and the adjacent ground level. Drop-offs may develop during highway work, such as resurfacing, or through the deterioration of shoulders, often caused by erosion. When not properly addressed, drop-offs may cause motorists to lose control of their vehicle. Shoulders should be properly maintained to prevent drop-offs from forming. Repair any drop-offs greater than 3 inches. Drop-offs can be repaired by backfilling the area along the shoulder with gravel and/or soil. Alternatively, a concrete gutter can be used.
